Service Hours

Rake 'N Run Giving back to the community in the form of Service Hours is a strong component of a well-rounded approach to Middle School learning. As a school Howard Street participates in service to our community by our annual Rake 'n Run in November and Bush Park cleanup in the Spring. Other opportunities are open to classes or individual students as the year unfolds.

We ask 6th graders to do a minimum of 5 service hours, 7th graders an additional 10 hours and 8th graders another 15 hours for a total of 30 hours while at HSCS. Eighth graders need to complete all 30 service hours as one qualification for Breakaway, the end of the year 8th grade trip.

"Service Hours" are defined as a helpful activity done for another without pay. This can include helping a neighbor, assisting at Church or helping at agencies like the Humane Society or the Union Gospel Mission. To receive credit for service hours, students should write down what the service project was, how many hours were worked and have a parent or adult in charge confirm the student work with a signature. This paper can then be turned in at the office or given to Mr. Salberg, who keeps track of the school's hours.
