Students
8th Science
Howard Street is unique among Salem-Keizer Middle Schools in that all students receive three full years of science education. The science program is designed to be a hands-on laboratory and inquiry-based approach to science education and meets the state standards in physical science, life science, earth and space science, and scientific inquiry. All students complete scientific inquiry work samples using the scientific method and research.
In a new form this year, 8th grade science is a companion class to 8th grade Humanities. Students will go to science every day all year and will continue to focus on lab-based Introductory Chemistry and Lab Processes (matter, characteristic properties, solubility, a four-week lab exam called the 'Sludge Test,' the periodic table, chemical reactions, radioactivity and environmental chemistry.) Students will be expected to participate safely in all labs and work with lab partners or groups. This is a hands-on class that requires attention to detail and includes projects and subjects that are integrated with 8th grade Humanities.
This class uses science and engineering proficiencies as well as habits of mind. Be sure to check both grade sections for information on your student's progress.
