6th Science

Howard Street is unique among Salem-Keizer Middle Schools in that all students receive three full years of science education. The science program is designed to be a hands-on laboratory and inquiry-based approach to science education and meets the state standards in physical science, life science, earth and space science, and scientific inquiry. All students complete scientific inquiry work samples using the scientific method and research.

6th grade science is an introduction to our program. This class meets for 45 mins every day and familiarizes our students with the scientific process and how to set up and run a science lab. The 6th grade year focuses on Earth & Space Sciences (weather, climate, the dynamic earth, astronomy) and Physical Sciences (motion, forces, energy, light, sound, electricity and magnetism.) Students will be expected to participate safely in all labs and work with lab partners or groups. This is a hands-on class that requires attention to detail.

Do you want to see the assignments or your grade? Go to My gradebook and use 6SciAFall08 (afternoon section) or 6SciBFall08 (morning section) depending on your class. Then use your student's id number as the password.

As part of the science curriculum, we will be performing many "Pop Bottle" science experiments and lab activities. I'm asking that your student bring in 2 liter pop bottles from time to time throughout the school year. Students will need their first pop bottle by Friday, October 3rd.

We will reuse pop bottles when possible, but many times we will only be able to use them once. Please make sure they are empty and rinsed out.

Thank you, Amber Namitz
