Bio:
Andrew Goldstein has taught high school Social Studies for 20 years. Over the course of his career, he has taught at Lynwood High School in inner city Los Angeles, Hawera High in New Zealand, South Salem High School and The 21st Century Community Schoolhouse in Salem, Oregon. His strengths are in the areas of project-based learning, integrated and contextual learning, and teaching to all students - particularly at-risk youth. He has co-created an integrated course in Environmental Issues that focuses on the core curricular areas of science, government and economics. In addition, he has co-developed an educational framework that has been replicated on an international level. He has trained schools in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Israel, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Palestine, South Africa, and Uganda. He is also the co-founder of The 21st Century International Schoolhouse organization in addition to receiving three teaching fellowships: the Madeline Hunter Fellowship, the SciMat Fellowship, and the Christa McAuliffe Fellowship.
Andrew co-founded The 21st Century Community Schoolhouse, the first charter high school in the State of Oregon. The Schoolhouse aimed to serve students who struggle in traditional high school settings. The school provided students with a closely-knit learning community. Thematic instruction, team teaching and a strong advisory program supported students as they engaged in rigorous performance tasks that simultaneously promoted academic achievement and self-confidence.
For the past five years, Andrew has served as a School Change Coach for the Oregon Small Schools Initiative. He has coached school leaders to close the achievement gap by creating small, personalized high performing new schools. Andrew's coaching is centered on creating school culture, structures and instructional practices that result in an empowering, high achieving learning community.
While not teaching, Andrew spends time with his wife, Molly. His favorite activites include biking, skiing, hiking, chess and travel.
