A Brief History
Howard Street Charter School was formed in 1997 by a group of concerned community members who wanted to keep a middle school presence in their local neighborhood. HSCS was founded originally as a national charter school and became a state charter school when Oregon developed its charter law.
The school the Founders created is one that champions experimental and hands-on math and science, exploration of the visual and performing arts, social justice and expression in both English and Spanish languages throughout the 6th, 7th and 8th grade curriculum. We call these foundational areas our three Es: Einstein, Ellington and Esperanza.
They are the core of all we do.
