Mission & Charter
A Brief History
Howard Street Charter School was formed in 1997 by a group of concerned community members who wanted to keep a middle school presence in their local neighborhood. HSCS was founded originally as a national charter school and became a state charter school when Oregon developed its charter law.
The school the Founders created, and the school that remains after 12 years, is one that champions experimental and hands-on science, exploration of the Arts, and expression in both English and Spanish languages throughout the 6th, 7th and 8th grade curriculum. We call these foundational areas our three Es: Einstein, Ellington and Esperanto.
They are the core of our mission.
